Introduction
Breast Augmentation, also known as Augmentation Mammaplasty, refers to the increase of breast volume, correcting their shape and symmetry, with the latest generation of silicone implants. In rare cases, this can also be done with fat harvested with liposuction.
Procedure
The detailed and extensive discussion with a plastic surgeon prior to the operation includes:
- Assessment of the condition of the breasts and detailed measurements of their shape and volume.
- Discussion on the expected outcome
- Taking pre-operative photos
- Detailed medical and family history
- Discussion of skin incision placement
- Type of implants to be used and different techniques
- Post-operative follow-up
Anatomy and body type play a decisive role in choosing the size of the implants to be placed as well as the elasticity of the skin for a natural result!
The operation is performed under general anesthesia and lasts 1-2 hours. Insertion of the implant via a small incision (3-4cm), placed in the inframammary fold where it is practically invisible or, alternatively, in the lower part of the nipple areola complex.
The implants are placed either under the mammary gland, under the pectoralis major muscle, or under its fascia (subfacial).
Selection of the appropriate technique depends, among others, on the size of the existing breasts and the type and size of the implants to be used.
The aim is to have a natural and long-term result without complications. In very few cases the implants will require replacement.
In the course of time, the breast changes. Gravity, pregnancies, weight loss, skin laxity can lead to the need to replace the implants. The larger the implant that is placed, the more likely it will need to be replaced due to its weight.
In-hospital stay is one day. Post-operatively, a special bra is needed for the duration of one month. Return to work and routine daily activities are allowed 5-7 days postoperatively.
